The IGFM is a human rights organization that was founded in 1972 in Frankfurt am Main. It supports people who work non-violently for the realization of human rights in their countries or who are persecuted because they demand their rights.
The German citizen Luis Frómeta Compte is one of around two thousand demonstrators who were arrested on July 11 during the protests against the dictatorship.
Today the Dresden family man turns 59 in the notorious “Combinado del Este” prison. He had visited relatives in Cuba in the summer and spontaneously filmed a demonstration in Havana with his smartphone for private purposes. The public prosecutor's office demands that he be imprisoned for 24 years for "causing public nuisance" and "inciting riot". While the German-Cuban is spending his 59th birthday in a cell with 30 prisoners today, the International Society for Human Rights (ISHR) is demanding his immediate release.
Although Luis Frómeta Compte has German and Cuban citizenship and has lived in Germany since 1985, the Cuban government has refused to provide consular support from the German embassy in Havana to this day. More information on Luis Frómeta Compte here.
